Gainsborough

Working with Gainsborough, ‘The Three Fates’ woven fabric design began as drawings inspired by Mill stories told by Charlotte’s grandmother, at a time when immersed in the allegorical interiors at Burghley House, this conjured ideas of the three mythological figures, Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Ink drawings were translated into artwork suitable for weave using silk threads to recreate the delicacy of the design and create an ethereal quality in the final cloth. As described by Gainsborough, “It seemed fitting for the three fates to be translated into woven cloth and their likeness picked out by the thread they deign to cut”.
